SWEEP OUT KATRINA - City Park

City Park Calls on Volunteers to Help “Sweep Out Katrina”
New Orleans City Park to Hold Katrina Clean Sweep Weekend

City Park has brought joy into the lives of New Orleaneans for over 100 years. Now, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina it’s our turn to give back. City Park will hold a Katrina Clean Sweep Weekend where volunteers are asked to come out and help bring life back to our beloved park.

Katrina Clean Sweep Weekend will take place on November 5-6 from 9-3 in New Orleans City Park. Volunteers are to meet in the tennis court parking lots on Victory Drive across from Hines Carousel Gardens. From there, they will be directed to various areas of the park including Tad Gormley Stadium, Hines Carousel Gardens, Roosevelt Mall, and other places that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Cleanup efforts will include but are not limited to leaf and limb removal, weeding, raking and sweeping. There may also be opportunities for volunteers to help plant new seeds in the Botanical Garden.

City Park CEO, Bob Becker, said “New Orleans will rebuild. New Orleans City Park will rebuild also, but not without your help. Just as it is impossible to envision New York City without Central Park, so to is it impossible to rebuild New Orleans without reconstituting an integral part of its soul- City Park.”

Unfortunately, nearly all of City Park’s equipment and supplies were destroyed so volunteers are asked to bring their own cleaning supplies, including gloves, rakes, weed whackers, garbage bags and other essential yard tools. Please, however, do not bring chainsaws.

Lunch and beverages will be provided. You must be at least 17 years of age or older to participate. Parties of 10 or more are asked to contact Julie LaCour in advance to make arrangements.

IF IT KEEPS ON RAINING, THE LEVEE'S GOING TO BREAK - Memphis Minnie, 1929

(Click on title to hear song)

If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break
If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break
And the water gonna come in, have no place to stay

Well all last night I sat on the levee and moan
Well all last night I sat on the levee and moan
Thinkin' 'bout my baby and my happy home

If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break
If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break
And all these people have no place to stay

Now look here mama what am I to do
Now look here mama what am I to do
I ain't got nobody to tell my troubles to

I works on the levee mama both night and day
I works on the levee mama both night and day
I ain't got nobody, keep the water away

Oh cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do no good
Oh cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do no good
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to lose

I works on the levee, mama both night and day
I works on the levee, mama both night and day
I works so hard, to keep the water away

I had a woman, she wouldn't do for me
I had a woman, she wouldn't do for me
I'm goin' back to my used to be

I's a mean old levee, cause me to weep and moan
I's a mean old levee, cause me to weep and moan
Gonna leave my baby, and my happy home

HURRICANE KATRINA SURVIVOR APPAREL

Due to my lack of employment thanks to Katrina
I came up with these items.
Please visit:
Katrina Survivor Apparel

The spray painted X on these items is a photo of an actual marking on the house of some friends of ours. The house got about 10 feet of water in it.

Thanks!

MARDI GRAS 2006

Officials Vow to Throw Mardi Gras Celebration in New Orleans
10-13-2005 3:30 PM
(New Orleans, LA) -- Most of the organizations that present Mardi Gras parades are vowing to keep the tradition alive in February. That, despite the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. In a report to the New Orleans City Council, officials said that Carnival 2006 will go on. There are still plenty of questions about financing, the size of the celebration, and more.

DRINKING WATER

Nagin: Some east bank water safe (source: Nola.com)

Mayor Ray Nagin announced Thursday that safe drinking water has been restored to New Orleans' east bank, west of the Industrial Canal. The Department of Health and Hospitals, the official regulatory agency for the State of Louisiana, certified the water quality, the mayor's office said.

Water on the West Bank was declared to safe to drink shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit in late August.
